#notyourdeficit: Honoring the unique strengths of first-gen students through community-based participatory research
Literature from universities and libraries tends to view first-generation students through a deficit lens, ignoring the strengths they bring to campus. This panel, comprised of first-gen students and librarians, will share findings and ideas for practical application derived from a community-based participatory research project that investigated the unique strengths, lived experiences, and preferred learning environments of first-gen students.

Exploring Racial Equity: A systems frame for advancing organizational transformation
Contemporary diversity ‚"training‚" often addresses prejudicial mindsets, unconscious bias, and ‚"whiteness‚" as a normative frame. While these experiences are valuable, few focus on the history of race in the US and the impact of policies and norms on racialized (and other) populations. This panel explores strategies for bringing this transformative content to library organizations through a training program called the Racial Equity Institute.

We Are Not a Monolith: Library Outreach to Diverse Populations
The suffix, "of color" has become ubiquitous in library discourse. However, in this session, we argue that there is power in differentiating and naming racial and ethnic groups when conducting library outreach. We will explore examples of outreach activities that take varying levels of specificity in approaching diverse populations, and we will assess their outcomes for success in terms of current and future library usage by these populations.

Some of these libraries provide valuable resources and programming to support economically-challenged communities in areas classified as food deserts. Gardening at libraries can empower its patrons to grow their own foods.  Libraries that do not have the growing space can provide support to their patrons in other ways, come hear how you can support your students who live in food insecure communities.
